ABout the Book
The sound of shuffling footsteps drew closer to his door, a reminder that time was slipping away. He could hear the muffled voices outside, urgent, and low. They were looking for something—someone—and he knew, with a cold certainty, that they would not leave until they found it. Until they found him. His mind raced through possible scenarios, each one darker than the last. Would they break down his door? Would they drag him into the night? Or would they simply ask him to divulge the information he now possessed, the knowledge that could either save or destroy him? He could feel the weight of the decision pressing against his chest, his breath quickening as he battled the urge to flee. Then came a voice, sharp and commanding, cutting through the rain like a knife. “Bior-Khoor! Open up! We know you’re in there!” Recognition sparked within him, igniting a fear he had tried to suppress. They had come for Mayen, and by extension, they had come for him. The voice belonged to Lual, a man Bior-Khoor had once considered a friend, now turned into something far more sinister. Lual was a figure shrouded in danger, known for his connections to the darker underbelly of their city. To have him at his door was a calamity he had hoped to avoid. “Bior-Khoor!” Lual called again, more insistent this time. “We don’t have all night! Let’s make this easy. Just give us what we want, and no one has to get hurt.” Bior-Khoor’s throat went dry. What did they want? Was it Mayen? Was it the information he had shared? The options seemed endless, but they all led to one conclusion: he had to protect himself and his family. He had to think quickly.
